Australia Hits The Small Screen

The official big sell of Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia began in the US on October 23rd with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman recording an exclusive episode with daytime TV host Oprah Winfrey. The Aussies flew to Winfrey’s studios in Chicago, with Jackman apparently excited about making his first appearance on the show. Earlier speculation said the internationally renowned chat show host would fly to Sydney to stage her own showcase on local soil, however due to other commitments it wasn’t to be.

A show that reportedly will be making the journey is the team at Good Morning America. It is speculated that they will film an entire weeks worth of shows on location in Australia. Other shows expressing interest in visiting down under include, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show and British morning program GMTV.

Those living in the USA wanting to catch something on their TV right now, tune in to Today [Oct 28th] at 7am on NBC and you’ll catch an interview with Nicole Kidman.

For the ever-busy Kidman and Jackman, their talk show taping with Oprah triggered a 10-week worldwide press push of Australia, which will see them launch the much-anticipated movie in Los Angeles, Sydney, London and Paris.

FilmInk, Dusty Drover On The November Cover

The November issue of Australian magazine, FilmInk, features a four pages spread with our very own Drover, Hugh Jackman, on the cover.

“[Baz] is really something else. …He pushes you, and give syou every opportunity in terms of research. He has such complete belief in what he’s doing, So does Catherine Martin; I can’t really see Baz without Catherine - they’re so intertwined. You’d jump off the cliff if they asked you! They’re so committed and it really bings out the best in everyone around them.”

And what of the character Hugh will be playing? “There are many similarities between a cowby in a western and a drover in Australia - there’s a toughness there, and they both say very little, even though everything is going on inside -but there’s a distinctly different kind of larrikinism to the Australian version of the cowboy. We tried to get a little of that in there too”

Exclusive Australia Content from Big Pond

BigPond telecommunications company in Australia were the first in the world to release the teaser trailer of Australia. Now they’re back with a whole sub site dedicated to the film and some excellent content!

The sub site features cast and crew information; we’re given the names of characters played by some supporting actors in the film. Visitors can download wallpapers, browse an image gallery or win a trip to Wrotham Park Lodge located in outback Queensland.

However most pleasing to the modern day fan is a series of exclusive videos. Sure some of the content is taken from the pre-existing Apple podcasts, but they have so much more. A five video feature includes interviews with Luhrmann, Kidman, and Jackman. We’re given a multitude of new images, each more exciting than the next. One video in particular is very well put together and details Australia’s history in dealing with some real issues in the film such as World War II and The Stolen Generation.

At this stage it appears access to the videos is limited to those living in Australia. However australiamovie.net has been able to make a substantial amount of screencaps so that our international visitors may share the excitement.

You Don’t Know Jack…man

The November edition of US publication Men’s Journal, features a Drover-esque Hugh Jackman on their cover and a great five page spread with a brand new interview.

The laid back article takes place in Sydney, Australia aboard a harbour cruise with wife Deborra-Lee Furness and children Ava and Oscar in toe, providing an entertaining and, at times, personal read.

“When the head of the studio saw Australia, he said, ‘Mate, when your grandkids ask your kids what you did, this is the movie they’ll put in.’ “

“He brings enormous Aussie charm to the role and this laid-back swagger, which I think hasn’t been seen onscreen for a long time,” gushes Kidman. “I think Baz brought something very different out of Hugh.”

Australia Co-Stars Feature on Cover of AWW 75th Anniversary Edition

This month, the magazine Australian Women’s Weekly turns a whopping 75 years old! To celebrate this occasion in style, who more iconic and stylish than Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman could grace this special cover?

Taken from the editor’s letter, “It’s no surprise that we are all fascinated by our heritage - it makes us who we are and shapes our lives. As our covergirl, Nicole Kidman, says in her birthday message, The Weekly’s heritage is “comforting”. We are extremely proud that Nicole and Hugh Jackman - two of Australia’s most iconic stars - agreed to be on the cover of our historic birthday issue and chose to talk for the first time to The Weekly about their roles in Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated film ‘Australia’.

The issue features a nice six page spread, with multiple images from Australia. Copies are available at Australian newsagents as of today, 24th September.

The full HQ scans are now available in our extensive gallery.

Film Promotion Steps Up a Notch with QANTAS

During September Australia’s famous airline, QANTAS, launched its ‘Australia’ campaign; the airline’s biggest promotion since the Sydney Olympics spokesperson, Wooldridge, says. “We’ve literally taken over the airline,” with Australia images and logos incorporated into most Qantas branding, including boarding passes.

Having recently flown with QANTAS australiamovie.net can safely report that the above comment is not an understatement. Anyone flying with QANTAS will not escape knowing about this movie. Boarding passes branded with information on how to win a trip to the Sydney premiere, a special in-flight preview and exclusive interview with Hugh Jackman, and even after exiting the plane the welcome bombardment continues. Entering and exiting the plane, the portable walkways are filled with half a dozen framed posters, each QANTAS gateway has a different billboard featuring one of the three character posters previewed just recently. Need to check your Arrival/Departure info on the large screens? You’ll find a large billboard for Australia above those monitors also. As you go to collect your baggage, you may think you’ve heard the last of Baz and his team…what was the name of that movie Kidman and Jackman are in again? Oh that’s right AUSTRALIA….says the giant indoor (but outdoorsized) billboard as you stand waiting more than long enough for your baggage to reach your hands. …and driving out of the airport, you’d want to tell your friends and family about what you’ve just seen, right? Well of course as you’re leaving they have luminous billboards of our lovebirds kissing in the rain. Promotional bliss.

Previously announced promotional partners Tourism Australia and RM Williams are now also joined by Coopers, Kirks, Natio, Telstra BigPond, News Limited and Jacob’s Creek. If they’re anything like this latest partnership the public awareness for this film will be huge!
