By now you’re likely well aware that Apple has established a Set To Screen educational podcast series and competition for young film students in the United States; now the Bazmark team have elaborated on this concept and a new competition, of similar vein, has been launched via New Zealand program Film3.
Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet, has documented Australia’s film-making process – and he’s giving Film3 viewers exclusive access to his videoblogs. All he wants in return is for you to then turn off your computer, pick up a camera, and show him how it’s done!
Using Australia as your inspiration, make a three minute film that incorporates something you’ve learnt from Baz’s videos and send it to us at Film3 for your chance to win big. The videos will be posted episodically in the lead-up to Australia’s release on December 26.
Entrants must live in New Zealand. Prizes include $2000 towards your next film, a tour of Wellywood, a script assessment from the New Zealand Film Commission and much, much more. So get cracking!

Podcast #6 of the Apple Set to Screen series is now available for download via iTunes (free) subscription.
This episode is a continuation on the previous Location Shoot podcast. Simply viewing the podcast, one can see why, not one but, two full podcasts were required to cover the huge undertaking that was the effort of the Bazmark team shooting at many remote locations.
In the lastest podcast see how Director Baz Luhrmann uses the enormous scale of on-location shooting in Australia and seamlessly combines it with intimate filming on man-made sound studios in Hollywood.

British edition of the EMPIRE film magazine has a great four page feature on ‘Australia’.
The magazine has four glossy pages with a great on set encounter from one of the writers at Empire. We get to hear from Baz Luhrmann, about the scale of the epic he’s taken on and the expectations involved in that. CM and Nicole Kidman have their say and Mr Hugh Jackman even gets a peek in towards the end.
“This is a land far, far away,” trills Luhrmann. “Metaphorically speaking, it has a sense of fairy tale about it.”
“This is the last of a dying breed, this kind of movie,” Kidman enthuses, harking back to those days before CGI, when you make your epic – African Queen, Doctor Zhivago – you had to drag your production lock, stock and barrel into the wilds. “I mean, they don’t build stuff like this anymore. To feel that air and see people ravaged by the elements, as hard as it is, it’s exquisite.”

The Screening Room is CNN’s half-hour monthly movie show that offers a compelling international perspective on the world of film, travelling around the globe to bring viewers the inside track on all aspects of the movie business.
In the month of June their focus is on the land down under, and it goes without saying that a stop to the set of Australia is at the top of their agenda.
Host Myleene Klass interviews director Baz Luhrmann from the sound stages of Fox Studios, whe’re we’re given some more of his great insights into the film.
At one point in the interview Baz Luhrmann comments, “I can say with absolute confidence, hand on heart type confidence, that the performances are beyond my expectation. And the chemistry between Hugh and Nicole is palpable and real, and that’s way up the richter scale for us. They’re physically a perfect match. You know what … great lovers on screen, they are like great dancers. They got to be a great partnership. They really are a tremendous match. They dance together physically, emotionally as lovers in the film”
“He is probably my creative soul mate. I just adore him. I think he’s got such a love of cinema and of life and he´s romantic and I can´t say enough nice things about him,” Nicole Kidman says of Luhrmann.

Hugh Jackman found a few more fans at the Fox Cinema Expo in Amsterdam this week.
The Aussie actor thrilled industry crowds at the filmfest, previewing the hottest titles to come for the studio, by introducing a new sneak-peak at Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia.
Fox showed extensive footage ‘Australia,’ which the director, Baz Luhrmann, explained, by video, that he was still posting after a yearlong shoot Down Under. The teaser roll, especially edited for the Hollywood crowd, has only added more buzz to the highly anticipated Aussie release.
Star appearances are often in short supply at Cinema Expo, so it played well when Hugh Jackman, co-star of ‘Australia’ along with Nicole Kidman, popped up to plug the holiday release.
“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Jackman said. “There wasn’t a second that went by that Nicole and I didn’t thank our lucky stars for being in this movie.”

The July 2008 edition of Vogue magazine has hit American stands already and fans of Australia should be flocking to the newstands.
The latest issue features a glamorous Nicole Kidman on the cover (as seen left), a sixteen page feature on the upcoming Luhrmann film Australia, including a wealth of 8 large glossy images by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz.

Popular entertainment news show Entertainment Tonight has yet again shown its interest and support behind Australia. In its latest of many stories, ET went behind the scenes of Australia and spoke to Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrmann on location.
