CNN: Scene By Scene

The CNN network have aired another great feature on Australia. This time as part of the Scene By Scene documentary.

Scene by Scene is a groundbreaking two part documentary, about the diverse and vibrant film industry across the Asia Pacific region.

The 7 minute segment on Australia featured a candid Luhrmann talking about aspects of filming on location, and the very real affects it had on cast and crew. Not only are we treated to Luhrmann’s insights, but we’re also given a glance at a new scene featuring dialogue with David Wenham and passionate embrace between our two leads Drover and Sarah. “They’re damn sexy together. I want burning passion…and they’re on fire,” comments Luhrmann when talking about Jackman and Kidman’s on screen chemistry.

Australia Hits The Small Screen

The official big sell of Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia began in the US on October 23rd with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman recording an exclusive episode with daytime TV host Oprah Winfrey. The Aussies flew to Winfrey’s studios in Chicago, with Jackman apparently excited about making his first appearance on the show. Earlier speculation said the internationally renowned chat show host would fly to Sydney to stage her own showcase on local soil, however due to other commitments it wasn’t to be.

A show that reportedly will be making the journey is the team at Good Morning America. It is speculated that they will film an entire weeks worth of shows on location in Australia. Other shows expressing interest in visiting down under include, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show and British morning program GMTV.

Those living in the USA wanting to catch something on their TV right now, tune in to Today [Oct 28th] at 7am on NBC and you’ll catch an interview with Nicole Kidman.

For the ever-busy Kidman and Jackman, their talk show taping with Oprah triggered a 10-week worldwide press push of Australia, which will see them launch the much-anticipated movie in Los Angeles, Sydney, London and Paris.

Fox Repositions ‘Australia’ in the Box Office Race

Nicole Kidman’s in London and Hugh Jackman is walking around Sydney clean shaven. Yes folks, the filming of pick-up shots has concluded! However, dont start counting your sleeps until the premiere of Australia just yet, because there’s been a slight change in plans.

The departure of the highly anticipated fifth Harry Potter installment has created quite a shuffling frenzy in the scheduling department of many major film companies. With the wizard vacating the November 21st position, and being held over for release until next year, many major films have quickly jockeyed into prime marketing position to round out the season.

Not surprisingly, one of the first to stealthily move in for the kill was the well known Bond enterprise, further creating a ripple effect. Executives have been left to question which is the right release date for their films. Originally being slated for a November 13/14 release, Australia has skipped in to the (pre-thanksgiving) position left vacant by Potter, November 26th. Variety reports that this date will be used for the American and Australian release.

Other movies set for release on November 26th include, Transporter 3 and Bolt. Obviously utilising this date without the immediate presence of a pre-existing brand debuting simultaneously is an effort to see the Bazmark film maximise its box office presence.

New Zealand Short Film Competition for ‘Australia’

By now you’re likely well aware that Apple has established a Set To Screen educational podcast series and competition for young film students in the United States; now the Bazmark team have elaborated on this concept and a new competition, of similar vein, has been launched via New Zealand program Film3.

Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet, has documented Australia’s film-making process – and he’s giving Film3 viewers exclusive access to his videoblogs. All he wants in return is for you to then turn off your computer, pick up a camera, and show him how it’s done!

Using Australia as your inspiration, make a three minute film that incorporates something you’ve learnt from Baz’s videos and send it to us at Film3 for your chance to win big. The videos will be posted episodically in the lead-up to Australia’s release on December 26.

Entrants must live in New Zealand. Prizes include $2000 towards your next film, a tour of Wellywood, a script assessment from the New Zealand Film Commission and much, much more. So get cracking!

Watch the first Video Blog here, which includes additional footage not previously seen in the USA podcasts!

Entry rules and further information can be found via the 3 Film website.
