The Cast and Crew Are Firmly Planted in Kununurra

Things have been pretty low key on set in Kununurra, though the stars have been spotted out and about town. The most public event was when director Baz Luhrmann and actor David Ngoombujarra attended a celebrity tree planting event on Sunday August 12, 2007. The pair each planted a Boab tree and Baz graced the 200, or so, large crowd with a speech about his filming in the outback.

The lull in news has given us a few spare moments to get some more content on the site. We have recently updated the time line of filming for Australia, Cast and Crew biographys including a much more extensive cast list. Finally, as a special treat we have opened a new section of the site, with wallpaper for your desktop. Be sure to check it out!

As always we’re still speculating and posting away at the australiamovie.net forum, so be sure to drop by and say g’day.

Richard Flanagan – Australia Co-Writer

Australian author Richard Flanagan, is a historian, novelist and film director from Tasmania, Australia. The 1998 film The Sound of One Hand Clapping, directed by Flanagan, was nominated for best film at the Berlin Film Festival and his latest work is a novel entitled The Unknown Terrorist.

Past accreditations aside, he is also Baz Luhrmann’s co-writer for the screenplay of Australia. Recently during a promotional interview for The Unknown Terrorist Flanagan discussed the task of working with Luhrmann and describes how he met Nicole Kidman during costuming screen tests. Visit our multimedia section and listen to a snippet of his interview with ABC North Coast radio.

Additionally, with thanks to curious_cookie and Project Mugetsu we’ve got a batch of new scans in the gallery. Be sure to check in all the time for the latest additions.

If you have any pictures of the cast, crew, set or scans from local newspapers regarding the filming of Australia, please feel free to send them in to

Resuming Filming in Sydney Allows the Stars to Spend Some Quality Time with Loved Ones

The cast and crew of Australia are back in the big smoke, Sydney. They have returned to film at Fox Studios for the next two weeks. Following this they’ll head off to Kununurra in Western Australia’s Kimberly region.

Kidman and Jackman have been spotted around town over the weekend, taking advantage of the downtime with their families.

“It is just beautiful for me to be making a film here and him (Keith Urban) touring here at the same time . . . that’s a pretty big deal for us,” Nicole told The Courier Mail. “It’s just lovely that coming from the same country gives you so much to draw from and bonds you in a way that people just don’t understand. When you come from different countries you really don’t bond in the same way,” Kidman said of her relationship with Urban.

While in town Nicole has spent time catching up with her sister Antonia Kidman. The pair, who share a love of horse-riding, saddled up over the weekend for an outing in Centennial Park along with Nicole’s husband, singer Keith Urban.

Meanwhile Hugh took advantage of a morning off. He bundled up children Oscar (7) and Ava (2) and headed out to breakfast on a crisp Sydney morning with wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

+ A new video has been added to the media section of Hugh, Nicole & Baz filming their brief stint in Darwin.

As you’ve surely noticed filming has begun in the Queensland town of Bowen and the Australian media has flocked with a vengance!

With the assistance of our wonderful forum members we’ve been gladly gathering whatever media we can to provide to site visitors who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to view or listen to media coverage. Visit our Multimedia section to download some treats.

Recent Additions:

  • 7 Videos pre-production & production
  • 3 Audio Interviews
  • Gallery Images, keep checking the gallery for regular updates including magazine and newspaper scans

If you have access to any video, audio or image content not already featured on the site, please contact us as we’d love your assistance in building our collection to share.

10..9..8..7… The Countdown To Shooting Has Begun.

Baz Luhrmann has recently snuck in and out of Bowen for another preliminary scouting tour of vacant land. Recall the pictures we exclusively showed you earlier this year? Well that’s precisely where Baz and Co. were to finalise some ideas for the shooting. It seems, unlike the residents of Bowen, the local wildlife weren’t as impressed by presence of Hollywood names. Click on the image to see a cartoon of Baz being swooped by a pair of nesting plovers, and visit our gallery for photographs of the event. As we all know it takes more than a few birds to stop Baz and he dutifully continued working.

However, on an unrelated note, wife and co-worker, Catherine Martin told Today in a TV interview that shooting has now been postponed a fortnight and will see filming begin in ten weeks. Visit our media section to download the interview.

Do you house a lot of rusty old cars from the 30′s and 40′s in your yard? Are people always saying that you’re crazy for keeping them? Well, Geoff Naylor, the action vehicle supervisor from Bazmark Films Pty Ltd, is looking for vehicles from pre-1938 and pre-1942.

“…we’re still looking for larger military type vehicles backwards from 1942. There’s a big scene of a military convoy leaving Darwin after the bombing”.

Bowen is being used to represent Darwin in 1936-38 when Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) arrives to take possession of a cattle station left to her in the Kimberley. “So we need vehicles back from 1938 and we’ll dress the streets of Bowen with these vehicles to make it look like Darwin,” he told the Townsville Bulletin. He also revealed that Nicole Kidman’s character does not return from the Kimberley until 1942 when Darwin is bombed.

If you have a vehicle you think Mr Naylor might be interested in please phone 0418 485 036. Please, legitimate vehicle enquires only.
