What a great film:fantastic to see all the great Aussie actors together including Aboriginal; amazing landscapes and in particular, I was very moved to see & hear the Aboriginal voices and the Aboriginal stories given prominence. I was swept along and away by the story. This film is an epic classic. BRAVO Baz & Catherine and everyone!!

Sadly, I missed “Australia” when it was in the theaters. I only wish that I could have seen it on a big screen because it’s such and incredible epic! But, I watched it last night with a friend and cried my eyes out. Then, I watched it again today on Comcast. I’m absolutely going to buy it on DVD.

I’ve always been a film buff and this is one time that I firmly believe that the stuck up American film critics got it so very wrong! Shame on them!

“Australia” goes on one of my favorite films of all time list. The casting was brilliant. Hugh Grant is one of the most talented and gorgeous men on the planet. Nicole was exquisite and they burned up the screen together.

Baz produced a truly brilliant film. I loved “Moulin Rouge” and “Australia” moved me in so many ways. I hope it will bring many Americans and people from other countries to read more about that period in Australian history.

I’ve traveled to many destinations and Australia has always been on my list. Now, I’d love to go more than ever. Hmm, I wonder if I could find my very own Drover over there! :)
This San Francisco woman can’t wait to see more of Baz’s films! I’ll look forward to seeing Hugh and Nicole together in a future film as well.

P.S. Hugh, you were the best host of the Academy Awards we’ve ever had!!

I cry every time that I watch the movie . As a African American I can relate to all of it and I have friends who live in Darwin. I have been to Australia and I can not get it ou tof my system. I have told everybody about this movie. The same things happened to Native American and African American slaves here in the USA

I am praying that this movie will be a healing for The Aboriginal people and Whites of your country. We have to stop the racism NOW. I can not wait to get back to OZ…………………………Love you all..and still crying

  • 4. Kevyn  |  May 1st, 2009 at 10:37 pm

I had the cringe factor when thinking of seeing this movie, but I knew eventually I would and I did.

And I am going to watch it AGAIN. :P

Yes it moved me, as has the plight of the aboriginal and the fact that we will never understand really how it is to be aboriginal, but this movie clears some of the obstacles in my mind.

    Thank you

  • 5. Jim  |  April 27th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

What a load of rubbish! This is just Hollwood garbage with mediocre actors and an highly over rated director. I assume this movie was aimed at 5 year olds? There is not one thing close to what Australia is actually like. Talk about cultural cringe! This movie is a joke isnt it?

  • 6. Donna  |  April 26th, 2009 at 7:36 am

I first rented the movie “Australia” to determine whether or not this would prove to be a movie to buy; I purchased my own copy on DVD here in the US and have since watched it half a dozen times; I can’t get enough of the movie. Every time I watch it, I get something more out of it; young Brandon Walters makes this movie happen. I hope and pray the right people will continue to follow him, ensuring he doesn’t fall off the radar for future projects and that they keep him safe. He is an extroardinary young man and is so captivating. This young person has truly touched my soul and is a fine example of just how wonderful God’s creations are and can be. Baz, I think you are incredible and you make me wish I had pursued a career in drama. Although this movie did not meet overall expectations here in the US by critics, it has proven to warm the souls of many of us. In the scheme of things, in my little spec of the world, where no one holds any significant place in society, no stars here; just average, hard working people trying to make a go of things as unemployment is high, this movie provides a genuine, nurturing approach to hope; it reaches the soul of a man and reminds us, no matter what a person’s standing is in society, no matter their circumstance, no matter what the ethnic background is, or where he or she is from, there is this simplistic beauty in life itself and none of us are exempt.

Wow, Australia was a gr8 movie! i loved every minute of it. I feel really proud to be an Australian.. :)

  • 8. Sarah  |  April 13th, 2009 at 5:38 pm

I loved Nullah. I want you to come for a sleepover at our house so you can come and listen and do stuff in the garden and we will be happy and you will be at a sleepover at our home with Dad, Mum, Kathryn and Sarah. Love Sarah (4 years old)

  • 9. Kathryn  |  April 13th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

To ‘Nullah’, that was the best movie ever. I loved the part when you said”no-one can get me” and you were dancing. I loved when King George wiggled and jiggled and when you laughed. Love Kathryn (6 years old)

  • 10. Scott & Amada  |  April 11th, 2009 at 9:10 pm

We were a little apprehensive about getting this film due to the bad critic reviews. I don’t know what they were thinking, this film is FANTASTIC!!! Just finished watching it and about to again (which is a fitst in our lives). Absolutely LOVE THIS FILM. A must see.

  • 11. Melissa  |  April 10th, 2009 at 9:32 pm

This was the best movie I have seen in a long time it made me remember what the true aussie spirit is all about.Any producer or critic who can critise this movie is nothing less than bitter !!

  • 12. miranda  |  April 7th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

absolutely brilliant!!….i bought the dvd last friday april 3rd…i have watched it 5 times already…I can’t stop watching it!! hugh is drop dead gorgeous, nicole was fabulous as was the “all time favourite aussies”…the outstanding performance was from brandon…a truly beautiful little boy…our country is really so beautiful, i can’t believe i knew more about what went on in pearl harbour than in our own country and in darwin..congrats to baz & his crew…i have experienced another one of your gems!!! go aussie

  • 13. Jenny Atkins  |  April 6th, 2009 at 8:50 pm

Lived too far away to see it at the movies so bought a copy as soon as the dvd was released. Had some hesitation about watching it but wanted to do so as I am fiercely patriotic but the “critics” did leave me wondering. Well the critics must have been asleep because it kept me riveted on the lounge for the whole time. I think it would have to be Nicole KIdmans best ever acting (so all you critics, go see it with your eyes open) and the whole cast and crew did a fantastic job. I will certainly watch it over and if I ever get to the big screen, then I will watch it there if it is on.

  • 14. Catherine  |  April 5th, 2009 at 10:12 pm

We just watched “Australia” on DVD. It was WONDERFUL!!! Thank you so much for a marvellous movie.

  • 15. Daniela  |  April 5th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

this website is great, there are so many informations its awesome!! thx

  • 16. Jackie  |  March 30th, 2009 at 5:30 pm

It is incomprehensible to me that the movie “Australia” was not among those nominated for an Academy Award in Hollywood. Rarely do I watch any film more than once, but after seeing this one in the theatre, I purchased the DVD and have now watched it multiple times. Being an American, I’m embarrassed and very sorry that this film was not recognized at the Academy Awards. It was far superior to the others which won awards. Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of Lady Ashley was exactly on target–one of her best roles in my opinion, and Hugh Jackman–well, what can one say? He’s superb in EVERY way. (Loved his outdoor splash bath!) Accolades to the Director for those beautiful, artistic love scenes.

  • 17. Alicia  |  March 25th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Loved the movie, thought it was great. Highly recommended.

  • 18. Cindy Dyer  |  March 24th, 2009 at 2:58 am

I loved this movie!! I watched it with my 15 year old daughter and she loved it as well!! Thank you for this wonderful movie!

  • 19. Deborah  |  March 19th, 2009 at 11:07 am

I just watched this film on cable. Because of my mother, I was raised with films of the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 30’s and 40’s. I did not think it possible that any movie today could match up to the quality of those films until tonight. I am deeply moved, Nicole Kidman as well as the other actors BRAVO BRAVO for a job of excellance that equals that of the greats. Trully you are all stars equaling your predessors. This is a must see movie. As for the director…same to you. Bring us more !!!! Blessings….

  • 20. Bianca  |  March 9th, 2009 at 2:50 pm

I thought this movie was so fantastic. What a wonderful work of art and beautiful portrayal of an amazing story.
    Thanks to all involved.

  • 21. Diana  |  March 7th, 2009 at 4:05 pm

What a wonderful film. It was Magical! Nicole Kidman’s portrayal of an English Woman in that time era was perfect. She need not feel embarrassed about her acting. She was great! I loved Hugh Jackman. The little boy was adorable!

  • 22. Nick Ammann  |  March 6th, 2009 at 11:39 am

I just wanted to say that the film was great, Awesome performance by everyone, Thanks for bringing this to the big screen

    Take care,

  • 25. Fiona Lake  |  March 4th, 2009 at 8:01 am

The Pigram Brothers, a band from Broome (northern Western Australia), were listed in the Australia film credits. I’m sure the incredibly catchy and memorable ‘la la la’ song mentioned by others, was sung by the Pigrams. The Pigram Brothers website: http://www.pigrambrothers.com.au/

Great to see the general public are smart enough to make their own minds up about ‘Australia’, rather than swallowing whole the opinions of jaded, overpaid (and in some cases very nasty and-or jealous) critics. Aussie expats have also been fairly vitriolic - but most of them think the Australian bush is embarrassing, and that cities are the only thing that count, because that’s where they live and work (they’ve been all around the world, but only to Sydney & Melbourne - Katoomba is as far west as they’ve ever been).

  • 26. Helen Bray  |  February 14th, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I have just come home from seeing the film Australia. What a wonderful picture. I was just swept away by everything about it. If Baz Luhrmann doesn’t win an award at the upcoming Oscars I will be disappointed. Nicole Kidman (great), Hugh Jackman (sexiest man alive - yes) David Gulpilil and little creamy, Jack Thompson, the unknown (to me anyway) indigenous actors who appeared, all get my applause and it showed once again the hurtful insults the black people of this country have had to endure all these years. Lets hope this all becomes a thing of the past very soon.

It was a wonderful movie and thanks from me to everyone who had a part in making this movie.

  • 27. sharon taylor  |  February 10th, 2009 at 9:37 am

As an American, I am disappointed the filmakers here did not honor this movie the way it deseves. Professional jealousy, perhaps?

Nathalie, I don’t know the name of the “lala” tune, song, whatever. The Chinese cook played it on the eukele during the drove and Hugh + Nocole “fox danced.”. I do wish someone would tell the proper name, tho. It was really pretty.

  • 28. Nathalie  |  February 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I’ve never seen a so wonderful movie in my life! Everything is perfect: landscapes, actors, story, etc… As a lot of other people writing here can’t stop thinking about it. I’ve already seen it 3 times and hope to go and see it once more!! And I’ve never done that before!! THANK YOU very much Mr Luhrmann and let’s hope you will do other perfect movies like that one!

I also wonder what is the “lala” song? Can somebody help?

  • 29. Chrissy  |  February 3rd, 2009 at 8:45 pm

O MY GOD!!!! absolutely magical, brilliant and amazing…baz is a genious and all who were in it were breathtaking….i can’t stop thinking about it

  • 30. Aril  |  February 2nd, 2009 at 11:26 pm

Last week, I went to cinema to watch this movie again, for the 7th times.
My friends call me crazy :). Maybe they are right, but I really love this movie. I never did this with other movies.
I hope someday, I have apportunity to visit Australia (Bowen).
    Btw I’m Indonesian.

  • 31. Jess  |  February 2nd, 2009 at 8:12 am

I went to see yesterday and really loved and enjoyed the movie.

Don’t see what all the negative press is about. Well, one guess would probably be because the Americans don’t understand Aussie culture and have the narrow-minded view that the whole world rotates around them thus ‘everything’ has to be ‘Americanised’.

Hopes and prayers that a well-deserved Oscar comes your way. Everyone involved in the movie should be proud of their hardwork.

Will defnitely add the dvd to my collection when it comes out!!

  • 32. kookimebux  |  February 2nd, 2009 at 3:27 am

Hi, guys. I’m American and I think the academy people have lost it! How could this movie not have multiple nominations? It is the best movie I’ve seen in years. Movies like this one are far too rare. I wish more were made. I’d go see every one i

  • 39. MS. J. Mueller  |  January 23rd, 2009 at 8:21 am

OK,so I missed it. ONE nomination for Australia, for best costume design. Must have been Hugh’s shirt! Oh, and Nicole’s marvelous dresses!

  • 40. MS. J. Mueller  |  January 23rd, 2009 at 7:24 am

Wow! Bummed. Not one nomination for an academy award! Can you believe it! I too love this movie ! I think those Academy guys could have given it at least one nod to show our support to the Aborigines and those folks down under! I can imagine that they all are thinking/feeling right now.
    well, they had my vote!!

  • 41. TIff  |  January 21st, 2009 at 11:14 am

  • 42. Anna  |  January 20th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

    Hi everybody!
I have visited the site and I am writing here because last saturday I saw the movie, and from that moment on I can’t think to anything else. I loved it so much… It is brilliant and moving and incredibly romantic…
I love the characters, their spirit and their passion.
At the end, when at last they find each other I could not help crying, and believe me, it is not so common for me. But they thought to have lost everything, to be alone and hopeless and in one moment they realizedto have love, a family a home… It was so touching…
I would like to thank mr. Bahrmann for this movie!

  • 43. sharon taylor  |  January 19th, 2009 at 8:06 am

Can someone tell me the name of the lala song played on the ukelele? It’s haunting and was used perfectly in the movie. It was a beautiful romantic moment with the perfect touch of realism when Nulla popped in. Loved it. All 3 times I saw it. Can’t wait for the DVD.

  • 44. Faroukh  |  January 18th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

hello from Germany, I saw the film two weeks ago together with my daughters and my husband and was just simply thrilled and overwhelmed. For someone like me, an Australia fan from far away, this was like being there for a little while. I loved everything, the landscape, the actors, the story. Thanks to those who made it for a great afternoon! By the way I did get part of the soundtrack yesterday at i tunes and am dreaming away again while listening to it. I will definetely have to buy the DVD to be able to watch the original version. Thanks a again and congretulations to a wonderful film!

  • 47. june taylor  |  January 15th, 2009 at 9:26 pm

Saw this fabulous movie last week, in the company of my two lovely daughters. We are unanimous in our pure enjoyment of the wonderful scope the film covered. Cant fault a thing, loved the photography, the beauty of Australia, the depiction of the Australian way of life, the coverage of the war issues, the emotion of the dreadful race issues and the fabulous acting. Thankyou for so much enjoyment.
We lived in ADELAIDE for eight years in1966, so we really related to the wonderful Australian experience.Wish we could repeat it, it was a fab time for us all.Look forward to Baz’s future work.
    Regards

  • 48. Gretchen  |  January 10th, 2009 at 12:21 am

I adore this movie! And I join all those who demand a soundtrack. This film has a great score. I want to put it on my iPod. Maybe if they have enough audience response, they will release the soundtrack.

  • 49. Carmen  |  January 9th, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Just Great!!! I’v seen it twice!!!

  • 50. Noha  |  January 9th, 2009 at 4:36 am

In three words: An amazing movie!

Great camera shots, great acting, nice costumes, amazing story, a very influencing movie…

I believe it can be added to the movie classics must sees.

I want to see it again…one time is not enough.

It made me search for a book talking about the Australian history…what kind of a movie can make u read a book????

Just a very outstanding one :)

  • 51. Aril  |  January 8th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

    Hi Lou,

I like what you wrote here. A movie is like what you said, doesn’t matter what critic’s opinion and how many awards it has, the most important is how much we like and appreciate it. Do we still want to see it again?
Do we still remember this movie until end of our life ? How well it done ? and does it touch our heart ?
I don’t think many movies can do it, but Australia definitely can do it.

I have seen this movie 6 times, last time I took 2 of my colleagues and they love it as well. Yes you are right, we should tell everybody how wonderful this movie. I msg all my freinds and my family, but unfortunately some of them should wait for a while as the the movie still not played in their cities.

Only I’m just curious, why is the title Australia and not Faraway Downs ?
No offence, I think Faraway Downs is more suitable with the story and also more saleable. Even at beginning, some of my freinds did not have interest to see it as they thought it would be a boring history about Australia. So I guess, if some people only see the title then they will not expect it will be good and will not buy the ticket, unless they already known the story or seen the trailer or know about Baz’s work,
But this is only my opinion.

Btw, when the cd will be released ?
Can not wait for any longer.
    Please please please…. :)

  • 52. Lou  |  January 8th, 2009 at 7:53 pm

I have seen this movie 3 times: took my husband, then my mum, then my friends. I have never before done this and I am 43 (seen a movie 3 times! )The movie still stays with - and inspires - me, what a masterpiece! I will definitely buy it on DVD to be inspired many times more. Well done Daz and Nicole and gorgeous Hugh (never seen you in the same light before!) I have felt annoyed at the flack from critics and hope Daz, Nicole and Hugh and everyone else from the film is reading this website. You all have deeply touched and moved everybody that I have spoken to who has seen ‘Australia’. This is what true movie making is about. I encourage everyone who has seen the movie and loved it to tell everyone they know and meet, let us get this movie up where it deserves in ratings (who cares about awards: moving and inspiring people is far more important). Hope it stays at cinemas a while longer, as word gets around to not believe the critics. The last time I saw it, the cimema was packed, so word is travelling. Well done this website I tune in daily to hear the lastest news.

  • 53. Lyndee  |  January 8th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

  • 62. Stacy  |  January 4th, 2009 at 2:19 am

I enjoyed this movie more than any movie I have seen in the last few years.
It is a classic. The critics should be ashamed of themselves.
Everyone played their parts so wonderfully. I hope to see it again soon.

  • 63. Tracy - Australia  |  January 3rd, 2009 at 10:08 pm

Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, and all the others did such a fantastic job in this movie! I love your gorgeous website! I am so thrilled that Hugh Jackman will be hosting the Oscars this year and I hope a movie book and the soundtrack of the movie will be made and coming out shortly. I will keep checking back on this website for the great updates!!

  • 67. sharon taylor  |  January 3rd, 2009 at 9:17 am

I love this movie. It should not even need to be nominated for awards. It should just BE AWARDED all of them. The music, the acting, the costumes, the photography… Everything was superb. I want to move to Australia! I want to “fox dance” to ukelele music under the stars!

  • 68. James - Toronto, Canada  |  January 2nd, 2009 at 7:34 pm

What a brilliant, entertaining film. Beautifully filmed, well acted and complete with interesting history.
This ought to be ranked alongside great cinema classics like “Gone with the Wind”. It’s rare for a film to combine so many attributes so well.

  • 69. Elaine  |  January 2nd, 2009 at 8:42 am

After seeing Australia yesterday, what I always suspected has been confirmed - never listen to the critics!

I was hesitant to go because of the bad press but from the opening scene I was in a Baz-trance. The film is not only beautiful to view but beautiful in its spirit and message.

And it’s the only movie to make me weep more than ‘It’s a wonderful life’

A return to movie making of old - an old is always best!

Thank you Mr Lurhmann! What a wonderful gift you have given to the world. I so appreciate Australia. Nicole is fantastic, Hugh impeccable - so many iconic Australian actors in one brilliant movie. You have captured the spirit of Australia that is in my heart and memory. I am proud of Australia (the movie). Thank you!

  • 71. Valerie Sweet  |  January 2nd, 2009 at 2:42 am

Best film ever. 3 hours of heaven on a freezing afternoon. The acting, the effects, scenery, story all superb. Quite exhausting, emotionally and the action. I hope all concerned get the credit they deserve. A deeper understanding of the aborigines for everyone in a world where civilisation has destroyed true values. Thanks

One ever said that the general public has much taste for quality: Much like a child who wont eat healthy because he has been reared on junk food. What ashame because Australia in my estimation is one of the Top Tne movies of my life. It has heart and soul and a message our world needs to hear. Thank the Director for making it and encourage him not to give in to the lack of taste by much of a tastless world. Not all that is great in life can be measured by money or worldly success. Anybody feel the same. I thank God for Australia!!!!!

It is a great Film. I am from the Northern Territory and was born in the War Year of ‘42. My parents were also pioneers of this Mystic country. I like the way the Aboriginals are at last put in the Limelight and they played their parts fantastically. The little boy is a Star. I do hope he will grow up and be able to enjoy Somewhere over the Rainbow. Watching the War Scenes in Darwin made me realise how lucky we were in Australia that the War didn’t go further. I wonder if other Australians think the same as I do. I lost myself in the Fantasy of this Once upon a Time story. It brought many wonderful memories back.
Congratulations to the Whole Film Team.

I have just seen the movie and loved it. Cant understand the negative publicity ! The acing superb, Nicole played the English lady to a T. Andall the others .And it cameod some wonderful aussie paerformances - Jack Thpmpson - as well asall the others. The scenry was beautuful. i really think the the media must be jealous that it is so good, because it is akin to Gone With the Wind. Maybe it should have had an intermission - many people had to have a loo break! But i will definiitly tell everyone how good it is. Thankyou.

  • 75. Aril  |  December 31st, 2008 at 3:34 am

I have watched this film 5 times, and still enjoy it much.
I msg all my freinds ask them to see it, almost all of them back with positive opinions, they like it too. I really really love this film, my favorite so far in my whole life.

I just don’t understand, why no nomination in Golden Globe. What’s going on here ?
    Somebody can explain please ?
    Thank you.

  • 76. Cynthia Cappello  |  December 30th, 2008 at 10:55 am

I saw Australia last night. It touched every fiber in my body. It offered so many different things. The purity of the story is so powerful.

I wonder if there are any soundtracks with calling songs available.

Sincere thanks to you and the cast and crew for such an amazing gift.

  • 77. Ricardo Pereira  |  December 29th, 2008 at 8:09 am

I saw “Australia” today and I loved it. Congratulations to all the people that worked in this epic movie. For almost three hours I traveled from the movie room in Setúbal (Portugal) to Australia (the country where I could live if my parents had gone, as the planned, to Australia. Thanks for the journey. The detractors are small minded - the movie is brilliant, a beautiful piece of work. I just don’t get what the detratctors could be thinking - time to pull that big stick out of your backsides. Well done Baz and the team, Nullah, Nicole and Hugh perfect in their roles also.

i will make this Sue quote :

Seeing Australia the movie was an enriching and inspiring experience

  • 84. Sue  |  December 25th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Baz, we loved the movie so much. It spoke to me as an Australian on a very deep level. I saw so much symolism throughout. We discuss the movie at work and colleagues agree, it’s a deep movie and a true work of art. I understand why some, particularly foreign viewers might not get it, but geez Baz, this has got to be up there with the very best Australian movies ever made. I’ve seen it twice and will go again before it leaves the big screen. If anything I got even more from it second time around and left in tears determined to do just as it says. Take a journey to OUR country.
Thank you so much. Seeing Australia the movie was an enriching and inspiring experience.

  • 85. sathiya  |  December 24th, 2008 at 11:56 am

Baz, you are a Legend mate! The whole 160 minutes went like 3 minutes. Got the message straight mate. Identity first!
Great Screen play, Awesome Cinemautography. Great kid Nullah!
    Still pinning my nerves!

  • 86. Bill Jones  |  December 23rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I just saw the film and am trying to recall Nullah’s final remarks about the importance of telling stories and keeping people belonging. If anyone can help, I’d be grateful. Thanks!

  • 87. Natalie  |  December 22nd, 2008 at 7:19 am

Please release the score from the movie! The track that was used for Trailer C, as well as the “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” themes, with the harmonica and the boys singing; those were great. Too many movies don’t release the film scores, and it would be a real disappointment if this one was not released. Thank you!!

  • 88. Lee  |  December 21st, 2008 at 10:35 am

    Hi Baz
Wanted to let you know that my partner and I loved Australia. Also, the critics who are writing negative reviews are full of S*#t. We felt proud to be Australian - and that is saying something because there hasn’t been a lot to be proud of. You are a living legend and don’t ever give up on your unique way of telling stories!!

  • 89. Jason  |  December 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pm

I saw Australia last night. It is a wonderful film. Simply amazing. Baz is an outstanding director and his two leads couldn’t have been better cast. This is going to be a timeless classic. It has EVERYTHING in it.

  • 90. Mike  |  December 20th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

I saw Australia yesterday and was disappointed. If I had that much time and money to make a movie, I’d make sure I had a great screenplay first. The best photography, direction and acting can’t make up for a cliche’d story. It was like a Bonanza rerun. There are hundreds of top class professional writers in Australia, any one of whom would have been thrilled to write a screenplay for Baz Lurhmann. Use the professionals next time Baz!

  • 91. Wislisquava  |  December 20th, 2008 at 6:35 am

    Thanks the author!

  • 92. Rayna Morris  |  December 19th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

A great movie that our whole family enjoyed (ages 15,22,48,49 and 82!) Critcs need to sit back and enjoy this movie for what it is- a wonderful story with fantastic cinematography. It never pretended to be a documentary. My father served in Darwin during the bombing and I know he would have enjoyed it if he was still alive. My Mum was really moved by the movie and thought it was in the same calibre as “Gone with the Wind”. Luckily I guess we still live in a democratic country where freedom of opinion is still alive and well. Long live BAZ! BY the way-more Australians that I know loved it and no-one I’ve spoken to disliked it-only the press….

  • 93. Katie Campton  |  December 17th, 2008 at 8:18 am

I think it is hysterical how everyone seems to need to have their two cents worth to critique the movie! Germaine Greer’s comments are so stupid. No-one said this was supposed to be a documentary about war-time Australia, it’s a movie. She is quoted as saying “it is a fraudulent and misleaading fantasy”, yep it is exactly that a fantasy! It’s got some historical basis but how it is fraudulent is beyond me. It is, like all of Baz’s work, a sweeping, dramatic romance, with touches of comedy and a good dose of tears. Each of his works has some historical basis but basically they are just movies, fantasies that are created to stimulate the senses. And I’ve seen each of the last four movies and think they are all brilliant!

But, and finally, they are works of art as are any movies, factual or fantasy. And with all art you either like it or you don’t. It doesn’t give the movie any less or any more value if the queen of England likes it, or if the bloke next door does. It’s art and they are all just people, and they’re all just opinions!

Personally I loved it as I love all Baz Luhrmann’s movies. But that’s just little old nobody me.

But isn’t that who movies are made for, the average everyday joe’s of the world?

  • 94. Marea  |  December 15th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

My husband and i saw the film.
And absolutely loved it, firstly the cinematography is fantastic, the diirecting unbeatable and Nicole and Hugh amazing to say the least..
I cried several times, finding it sad and at times hard to watch being a mother i suppose…but apart from my extremely watery eyes, i found it very truthful and factual.
Parts of the film could be used in a tourism advert for Australia it is that good..
No one can tell me Nicole didnt do a great job playing the role of Sarah, she was terrific…and the young boy who played Nullah was great, his first role in a movie, he has a great future..
I loved it that much i am takiing my mum to see it this week again..
Here here to Baz and all his crew, well done boys and lets see how the rest of the world loves your latest masterpiece..
    Marea Gray.. (fan)

  • 95. Hayley Solich  |  December 14th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

I saw Australia last night and I comment Baz and the cast for creating a movie that I will always remember. I cried, I laughed, I was deeply touched by the way he told the Aboriginal story how it was, not watered down, but the reality of the brutalisation of these people. I had heard mixed reviews and even the person I attended with at first didn’t enjoy it, but I tried to explain to her that the almost comical beginning was intentional and the style that Baz had chosen.

I think they did an amazing job and I’d love to see it again. The cinematography was so beautiful and I will never forget the scene with the little boy on the end of the cliff. It was truly inspired. It also taught me history that I didn’t know, in that I was not aware that the Japanese actually bombed the Darwin. I knew they had attacked us but I didn’t know that they had destroyed buildings and taken lives. That was a sad reality of war that I hadn’t considered, having always thought Australia was untouched by war. May we never forget the sacrifices of those who carved a life out of this great nation, nor those whose lives were taken in that carving out.

  • 96. Liesel A.  |  December 14th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

I really felt compelled to tell everyone what a wonderful movie this was. I was encouraged my mother to see this as she coined it an adventursome epic with heart. I found that to be true, and then some! I loved Moulin Rouge and the fantasy and dream-quality of Baz Lurhman, and I see that same quality lightly here in this film. It felt like the old movies one waited all week to see on a Sunday — a real event. It has comedy, romance, drama, good messages, and your heart will be stolen away by the young boy. What a real gem that the whole family can go see and come away with some good solid messages. I guess the Australian government is growing up like the American government as well! Most of the Fall movie season has been poor. Thank you for a beautiful artistic piece!

  • 97. Duey  |  December 13th, 2008 at 2:28 am

A great movie with great music!! I read in wonderment some harsh criticisms from film critics but then think of some of the awful films to which they have given such good reviews. Other then some cinemagraphic glitches I consider one of the best films I have seen.

  • 98. jeanie  |  December 11th, 2008 at 5:14 am

Best first kiss I have ever ever seen.

  • 99. Sue  |  December 10th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

What a total stroke of genius! I can’t believe that some of the critics have been so lukewarm about this masterpiece. I loved the way that the beguiling music of Arvo Part wove its thread throughout the movie. How disappointed I was that I couldn’t pick up a CD soundtrack at the music store afterwards, just to hear the stunning harmonica and children chorus doing the enchanting number at the end.

  • 100. sharon  |  December 10th, 2008 at 3:38 am

I’ve seen the movie 3 times and
I hope to see it again this week
end. I LOVED IT. I especially
liked the music and hope ALL of
it is featured on the CD, even if a
multi-CD set is necessary. I’ll buy
    it!

  • 101. Laura  |  December 9th, 2008 at 7:27 am

I just saw’Australia’ for the second time. Had alraedy seen it on opening day, but just didn’t get enough of it. This time around, I got to see it on a mega screen, which was incredible!!

I love the intertwined stories throughout the movie. I’m am a HUGE ‘Wizard of Oz’ fan, and just loved the fact that it had a huge part of this movie.

I’m an Aussie by birth, but was pretty much raised in the States. This movie really makes me want to make a move back ‘home’. My uncle was killed in the Darwin bombing, so that struck really close to my heart.

If you haven’t seen the movie, be prepared to laugh, to cry, and to fall in love with the actors and the scenery. ‘Australia’ is truly a masterpiece!!

  • 102. Kathie  |  December 9th, 2008 at 7:10 am

I just saw AUSTRALIA today! I expected a good movie. I NEVER expected to totally lose my heart!!
Brandon is so perfect! What a performance!
I cried all the way home!
I stopped at BEST BUY, fully expecting a soundtrack. How could that movie NOT have a soundtrack?
I’m anxious for it to come out.
    What a truly WONDERFUL film!!
I’m totally devoted to ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ and that entire thread moved me so much! I had no idea it was a part of the storyline!!
MYMYMYMY!!!! I just went to see Hugh, Nicole and the scenery! I got 1,000 times more than I expected in SO many ways!
Thank you, Baz, and EVERYONE who had anything to do with this film!

  • 103. Mia  |  December 8th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

A cinema classic! Mum and Dad think this is going to be great for the Kimberly and for tourism in the ‘Top End’.

    Breathtaking, emotional, adventure!

Best of luck to all cast and crew,
    now and forever. xoxo

  • 104. David Anderson  |  December 6th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

My wife and i loved this movie. She is Chinese and sometimes has difficulty following a movie. On the way home she explained all the stories that moved throughout the film and fully understood how they were entwined. She decribed the elements of racism and now understands why it still sometimes affects us when we are seen together. A cinematic joy and the whole cast was magnificent. And now i can see why the little boy may be nominated for his acting. Acting?
sorry - his beautiful ,naturalistic re-acting!!

  • 105. brigitte von bulow  |  December 5th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

What a beautiful, beautiful movie! The story is incredible, historically correct, (Darwin indeed got bombed by Japan in WWII), so very Australian, the language, the beauty of the land, the comradeship, warmth of real friends, the happiness even in the most difficult situations and the uniqueness of that breathtaking country.

Our history told with love, strength and pain, all woven into a 3 hour cinematic masterpiece, climaxing into the reality of what Australia really was for 40.000 years : those incredible, spiritual, dream-like wonderful Aborigines, going for a walk-about to Arnhem land and sharing their dream-like magic and culture..

    with love and a g’day,

  • 106. AURORA RUSSI  |  December 5th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

I haven’t yet seen the movie, carn’t wait though. I wondered was there a novel or a book that the movie was based upon. I thought I understood Baz to mention it on an ABC interview some weeks ago. Could you help me out please.

  • 107. Laurie Merwin  |  December 5th, 2008 at 7:45 am

I saw the movie over the opening weekend and I am ready to go back to see it again. I live in Pittsburgh, Pa and the theater was full. The movie was beautiful, actors were wonderful and the young man who lived with Miss Boss was a natural born star. I never knew how beautiful Australia was. It makes you respect the people and the land.
The movie was so well done. Hugh and Nicole were a great team and Hugh Jackman is the Sexiest Man Alive. Without a doubt…I will be seeing it this weekend and will find more things to fall in love with….
Thank You for an Oscar worthy movie

  • 108. Marg  |  December 4th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Well done Baz! I LOVED this movie. It is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. I laughed, I cried, it filled my heart and made me so proud to be an Australian. I was completely engrossed in the movie from start to finish and didn’t want it to end! The audience spontaneously applauded at the end-(something not often seen at the cinema). Well done again Baz - you are a genius.

  • 109. trisha  |  December 3rd, 2008 at 10:43 pm

I just came out of the cinemas and am in love with the film “Australia.” It is stunning, an absolute visual feast! No one does spectacular like Baz. Hugh Jackman is sexy as sin! David Gulpilil is truely flawless in his performance, David Ngoombujarra is deadly as he drover’s brother in law and David Wenham is scary, very scary!!! and Brandon? well Brandon just steals your heart. Nicole has coped a lot of flack over her performance I think she warms into her character as the movie progresses. I havn’t seen a movie this beautiful since “Gone with the Wind.”

  • 110. Natalie Doumit  |  December 3rd, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Saw the movie tonight and loved it. I haven’t cried so much in ages. The young boy in it melted my heart. He was awesome, as was everyone else. I didn’t even notice that it went for so long cause it was amazing. Well done!

  • 111. Karenne Wood  |  December 3rd, 2008 at 8:29 am

Went to see Australia last night and on leaving the Cinema I was totally blown away. What an awesome movie. Not being a Nicole Kidman fan I was not sure what to expect, but her performance was brilliant and Hugh Jackman totally brilliant. The performance by Brandon Walters was totally believable and I hope he wins an Oscar for his performance. Well done to Baz Lurhman and all the production crew. Will be recommending all my friends go and see Australia.

  • 112. Mary Silas  |  December 3rd, 2008 at 6:48 am

I heard Buz is chosen to direct
the musical WICKED as the movie.
I think he CAN do it too.
If Baz can direct THE BOY FROM OZ
    Hugh Jackman in AUSTRALIA-
He can do justice with Elphaba THE GIRL FROM OZ!
After all, he did GREAT with MOULIN ROUGE.

  • 113. Terrieann Thompson  |  December 3rd, 2008 at 5:54 am

I will hear you! What a fantastic line, I went to bed last night after seeing Australia thinking and dreaming. I woke up still reeling with this amazing piece of work. Well done everyone. Australia was awarded a stanging ovation at our local Miranda cinema last night. I have never seen anyone clapping and cheering a movie in a cinema. You heard people saying “Dosn’t it make you proud to be an Aussie? It left me wanting more…….

  • 114. Cyndie Niceley  |  December 2nd, 2008 at 11:02 am

Just went to see “Australia” today after reading about it in a magazine, and it was everything and more that I was hoping for. It is so unusual to see a film of this caliber in this day and age. I so hope that the public will prove with their support of this timeless epic that the elitist media are not always right! Hopefully more such will follow.

  • 115. Judy  |  December 2nd, 2008 at 10:23 am

Despite some reviews I wanted to see the movie and was so impressed,
I grew up in Sydney and Hobart. My brother worked in the Aboriginee
Affairs Dept. in Darwin for a few years. The whole story that Baz wove was so well done I think people will go away with a great feeling. We cried a lot and
cheered. The actors chosen were great for the characters and the young
aborginee boy was so wonderful. It was interesting seeing Bryan Brown
again. The photography and the music were great. What many would not
know was the bombing of Darwin. I was a young girl at the time of the
    World War 11.

  • 116. TeeCee  |  December 2nd, 2008 at 4:48 am

With out a doubt the best movie I’ve seen in years perhaps even since Gone With The Wind! This is the type of feature I need to get me back going to the movies on a regular basis. Great job! Can’t wait for the Oscars so I can say AH HA, I told you so! Thanks!

  • 117. Evie  |  December 1st, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Saw ‘Australia” on 28th November. Time passed so quickly and easily watching this gorgeous movie. Corny in parts, but I think deliberately and delightfully so! A visual feast as well (including Hugh Jackman). Loved the leads, and the relationship between Hugh and Nic. Thought Jack Thompson’s character was great, and David Wenham was SO nasty! Good on Bryan Brown also.
How long until the next movie Baz?

  • 118. Kat Smith  |  December 1st, 2008 at 11:10 am

This is the best movie I have seen in many years, and I go to the movies a lot. I was so engaged at every moment that the laughing and crying interchanged at will. The actors played their characters so believably, I never wanted the story to end. The aborigine boy was amazing as were Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. I hope for many oscar nominations.
Thank you so much to all the participants for making this amazing movie. It was an incredible way to spend an afternoon and I continue to contemplate the meaning of the story for myself. I am forever changed by this beautiful story.
    Thank you

  • 119. Rosie Vince  |  December 1st, 2008 at 9:29 am

I admitt I entered the cinema a little nervous hoping it wasn’t going to be corny and cliche. The start of the movie was a little untidy and a few cringeworthy moments in the first 15 mins made me think I had wasted $16.00 . Then the actors seemed to relax into their roles as the story unfolded and Baz seemed to find his feet too. I enjoyed it, didn’t clap at the end as did some of my fellow moviegoers, but was not disappointed. Came away thinking I would like to see it again. I actually thought Nicole Kidman was OK, I don’t think she deserves the flak she is receiving for this role, have certainly seen worse from her and plenty of other “seasoned” actors. Great to see so many fine Australian actors making an appearance, we rarely see them so that when they pop up it takes a moment or two to register who it is. David Wenham plays such a good baddie I cheered at his demise. The stampede scene is worth the price of the ticket alone. Well done Baz!

  • 120. linda  |  December 1st, 2008 at 9:17 am

this is the first time I have ever felt sufficiently moved by a film to do this. The film is amazing. I went with a female friend and we laughed, cried, clutched each other in the scary bits. Baz, if you read this, you should be proud. I went with no preconceptions, and was more than happy. i have made it today’s task to tell at least 5 people to go and see the film.

  • 121. Lex  |  December 1st, 2008 at 8:57 am

The best movie I’ve seen in year! I was blown away by this film. It was one of the best movies I have ever seen. Here’s hoping it’s nominated for best picture!

  • 122. Sharon- Melbourne  |  November 30th, 2008 at 6:10 pm

Thank you very much Baz for a truely wonderful movie. The scenery in which this film was shot was really breath taking. You made me laugh, you made me cry, you made me take a look at how badly our our true Australians were treated then and even today. It’s not just them, but every culture from every race and every nation in the world. As a white man we don’t have a great deal to be proud of. You are truely a great director and story teller. I have enjoyed this movie and plan to see it many times. Thank you for a wonderful experience. I really do appreciate it. thank you again.
    you are really blessed.

  • 123. Colleen M  |  November 29th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

I have just seen ‘Australia’. LOVED IT! My only criticism…the movie gave the impression that the stolen generations only happened to indigenous people in the NT when it happened to them throughout Australia. My mother was one of them (the stolen generation) & ironically she was born in Bowen.

  • 124. Girl in the Silver Gown  |  November 29th, 2008 at 9:27 am

I was wondering where the site had disappeared to. So good to see your back on again. I saw the Australia movie on the 26th. It was amazing, exceptional and extraordinary [was a dancing extra in this and saw quite a few peaks of myself].

  • 125. Shellsey Sydney Australia  |  November 28th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    Hi,
I have seen the movie ‘AUSTRALIA’ on Wednesday, it truly was a rare and exceptional film. I will never forget the experience and the real insightful look into the history of Australia. I found the movie transport you into a place were you experience real life emotional turmoil, death, heartache, grief, compassion, ultimate acts of hatred, racism, showing a true reflection
of the stolen generation, injustice, human beings at their worst, plus human beings at their exceptional best and potential, breathtaking scenery, sincere touches of warmth, heartfelt expressions of innocence, real love, turmoil within the human spirit, transformation, delightful moments of joy, touches of magic, great humour and laughter, sensitivity and respect towards aboriginal culture and spirituality. This is a rare piece of creativity that touches the heart in a subtle but powerful way. Thank you Baz Luhrmann for your rare insightful movie of Australia …. I jumped with fright, laughed loudly, cried with sadness and from a place of great joy. This is a REALLY SPECIAL FILM.

I’m looking forward to this movie. And I will say, it’s awfully nice of you to make a movie about Australia so soon after my book, Waltzing Australia, was released. Perhaps the book and movie will both contribute to increasing interest in Australia. We can hope so!

  • 139. Joanne Burgess  |  July 12th, 2007 at 11:21 pm

As one of many volunteers in Darwin it was really exciting for Baz and Co., to bring Hollywood to Darwin, finally! What a sight on the wharf to see the waiting public looking out for Nicole and Hugh sailing around Darwin Harbour. To actually witness the making of Australia and with a birds eye view behind the scenes, it is really amazing to see how films are made. It was interesting viewing the displays of old Darwin (Bowen)town, in this lifetime and the re-enactments of the bombing of Darwin will be remembered for a very long time. Thank you for bringing the ‘buzz’ to Darwin and we hope you consider having the premiere of Australia in Darwin next year! We can’t wait for you all to come back! We will all be talking about this experience for quite a while!

What a great website. An an ex Bowen-ite it’s great to see all the publicity it’s been getting. I’ve been cutting out any articles in the newspapers and mags that I see and now have a Bowen Tribute wall at work. With the addition of some tourist guides that mum & dad supplied on their last visit I am now classed as the local tourism bureau at work and already have a few people interested in going up for a look.

I am a bowenite, but have been away for 6 years now. Was great to visit again, and see all the happenings of the town. It is great that the locals get right behind the movie, and at the same time, treat the stars like anyone else. I do hope they start doing actual set tours maybe on the days that filming is not happening. As it would make a great visit, even better to the movie set.. keep up the great work, and cant wait for the movie.

  • 149. Laura  |  May 26th, 2007 at 5:24 pm

I am a resident of Bowen and I must say I see more of Hugh and Nicole on this site then I do here in town. (And i head up to the movie set nearly everyday to check it out)
It is great though to have the movie being shot here, watching the set go up (no most of the buildings do not belong here they were built for this purpose) and seeing the cows run along the street is a real treat.
I think this site is great, it kees us informed about whats going on and has some great pics!!!!!

  • 150. Karen  |  May 10th, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    G’Day,

This site is awesome. Reading the daily news & seeing the pics makes my day complete. I cannot wait to see this movie and am looking so forward to all that can be learned & discovered about Australia. I have raved [to friends & neighbors]about Aussie talent in television & movies. McLeod’s Daughters, After the Deluge & CrashBurn just to name a few. There are endless movies & books to name also. I can only hope, that in our near future, the American television & movie industry opens it’s arms open wide to Australia -creativity, talent, generosity & warmth.

    Forever a loyal fan.

    Cheers

Last weekend I was driving from Townsville to Mackay, with the kids, on the way to an interregional sporting comp. The 4 hour trip definitely needed a good break and Bowen marked the halfway point. My curiosity to leave the hwy and take a look at what I’ve been hearing about over the last 3 months was well rewarded.

Not having seen Bowen’s Front Beach area before, I drove into town, parked in the main street, took the kids to the bathroom and then we wondered around. Not having ever been to Bowen before (we only recently moved up here) It was hard to tell what was part of the sets and what was just part of this typical country town. There was a stockyard built near the beach which seemed to be an unusual place for it to be. It looked old, as though it had been there for years, but at the same time there were telltale signs that it was new. There was the Territory Hotel, which is featured in the photos on this site. The hotel also looks at home in Bowen - except for the name!

It looks like an amazing place and a great set for a movie. I think it is well prepared to show the world the real Australia which many of us know.

At last, a potential movie to sell Australia and our much maligned but great industry and actors to the world. Australia led the world in the development of movies 110 years ago - its long overdue in recognition and the more interest generated the better the production will be because these actors will step up for their country !

  • 155. Shane  |  April 10th, 2007 at 5:20 pm

I’m in this movie WOO lol

  • 156. Jah  |  April 9th, 2007 at 5:33 pm

I am a resident of Bowen. I am extremely excited about the upcoming making of the movie “Australia” in our town. How wonderful for the youth of our town to be able to witness, and possibly be involved, in the making of such an epic movie by such a talented director and world class Ozzie actors. well done Baz!!!

  • 157. Sarah  |  April 3rd, 2007 at 6:31 am

This website is fantastic, when I was searching for info on the web I hadn’t dreamed of finding one as informed as this, it’s fantastic when do you get all of you information from?

  • 159. Thor Prohaska  |  January 8th, 2007 at 12:11 am

I’ve heard it said that ‘coincidences aren’t’. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the movie ‘Australia’ as my home town is Moongunya (Collinsville) which is only 82 kms inland from Bowen. And as my family owned a beach house in Bowen I spent a lot of my early years there which left many fond memories of ‘Sleepy Hollow’.

Recently I have been working on a project that includes an improved national anthem. And, coincidently, it is titled, ‘Australia’. You’re welcome to check out the improved version at http://www.anthem.net.au and have your say about what you think.

This site is totally amazing!!! I can find everything I want for one of the Best Movies Ever. Its absolutely sure that Australia will be the film of the year and win many Oscars. I hope Hugh will gain one too- you see he is my favorite actor, he is unique and he proves once more his quality in this masterpiece. Both Hugh and Nicole are so beautiful in the film and I think their chemistry is palpable. Oh, I can’t wait to see them on screen on Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!
